Holding drills: building a steady hold at home

- 10m Air Rifle
- 50m 3 Position Rifle
A steady hold is built away from the range. Ten focused minutes a day at home beat one long weekend session.
The basic drill
- Set up a small aiming mark on a wall at the correct height.
- Take your normal position and settle your breathing.
- Hold on the mark for 8–10 seconds, then rest for 20.
- Repeat 10 times. Stop as soon as the quality drops.
Make it harder, slowly
- Close your eyes for the last 3 seconds and check where you are when you open them.
- Stand on a folded mat to challenge balance.
- Add a second set once the first feels easy for a full week.
What to watch
Your hold should settle, not be forced. If your shoulders tense up, shorten the hold. Log each session in your diary so you can see the hold area shrink over the weeks.
